An “Essentials” Guide to packing your hospital bag for expecting parents
The anticipation of meeting your little one is building and you're almost at the finish line. Now it’s time to pack your hospital bag! If you’re like me, then you want to know what are the “must haves” that will make your hospital stay comfortable. But don’t worry, I took the guesswork out with my essentials checklist. If you are wanting a more comprehensive list, I have you covered too! (here).
So when do you pack this all-important bag? Well, the sweet spot is usually between 32 to 36 weeks of pregnancy. At this point, you're close enough to your due date that the likelihood of needing the bag is more real, but far enough away that you won't be thrown into a packing frenzy in the midst of contractions.
I’ve included links to some of my favorite items for you (*Affiliate links)

For Birthing Parent
Comfortable Clothing: Pack a couple of pairs of cozy pajamas or lounge clothes. Make sure they're nursing-friendly if you're planning on breastfeeding, and easy to move in. Comfort is key!
ID and Insurance Card: Vital for identification and insurance purposes, make sure these are not forgotten!
Birth Plan: Having a written birth plan can facilitate communication between you and your birth team. Keep a copy of this on hand to ensure everyone is on the same page.
Toiletries: The basics will do - think toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, facial cleanser, shampoo, and conditioner. Pack travel-sized containers to save on space. Don't forget your lip balm and a good moisturizer - hospitals can be quite dry.
Snacks and Drinks: Labor can be long, and hospital food isn't always up to snuff. Pack some healthy, energy-rich snacks to keep you going. Don't forget electrolyte drinks or powders to stay hydrated.
Nursing Bra: If you're planning on breastfeeding, a comfortable nursing bra will make the process easier.
Extra Long Phone Charger: Outlets in hospital rooms tend to be placed in inconvenient places. Snag a 10ft charger so your phone can reach the outlet while you’re in bed!
Pillow and Blanket: The comforts of home can make a big difference. Your own pillow or a cozy blanket can help you feel more relaxed and comfortable.
*Stroller fan: Just trust me you are going to want to have it. When you are in the midst of active labor
Comfort Measures: These are the things you want to help you through your labor process. Think-essential oils, twinkle lights/battery operated candles, portable speakers, affirmation cards etc.
For Partner
Change of Clothes: A fresh set of clothes will come in handy, especially if you end up staying at the hospital for a longer period.
Toiletries: Don't forget your toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant. You'll appreciate the refresh.
Snacks: Labor can be a long process, and you'll need to keep your energy up too!
Chargers for Electronics: Between photos, calling loved ones, and maybe a little bit of distraction during labor, you'll be using your devices quite a bit. Don't forget those chargers!
For Baby
Coming Home Outfit: A special outfit for your baby's first trip home is always nice. Remember to account for the weather.
*Car Seat: Most hospitals won't let you leave without one, so be sure to have it installed and ready to go.
That’s it to my essentials guide to packing your hospital bag! So, to all expectant parents out there, it's time to embrace this remarkable journey. Happy packing!
